Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
