Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
