A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
